Provide developmental academic advising for new and continuing students using a case management approach. Assist students in defining personal and academic career goals, interpreting and understanding placement scores, program curriculum and pre-requisites, and developing basic skills to register for courses, as appropriate. Responsible for providing leadership to ensure that students with disabilities have access to opportunities available at the college. The Academic Advisor will refer students to appropriate internal and external resources that foster student success.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Demonstrate strong commitment to student development and success through advocacy, positive attitude, adaptability, approachability, problem solving, and support.
- Demonstrate developmental academic advising that assists students in clarifying personal and academic career goals through appropriate student development, human development, and student learning theories.
- Assist students in interpreting and understanding placement scores, program curricula, and prerequisites.
- Assist students in understanding the college registration process and necessary procedures before semester start.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of academic programs, curriculum, institutional practices, and policies.
- Coordinate with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to ensure advising materials accuracy.
- Possess knowledge of student financial assistance programs.
- Manage academic advising caseload to promote retention, persistence, and student success.
- Assist students in developing Individualized Academic Plans.
- Monitor student progress via meetings, communication, interventions, assessments, and data collection.
- Maintain academic advising records compliant with college policies and FERPA.
- Develop and maintain appropriate relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Engage college community through a communication plan in the advising process.
- Promote inclusive environments valuing all individuals.
- Participate in professional development, organizations, and college committees.
- Identify, secure, and coordinate appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities per ADA and Rehabilitation Act.
- Counsel and advise students with disabilities.
- Provide faculty, staff, and service providers with support and materials to aid students.
- Establish referral resources and maintain relationships with external agencies for additional support.
- Compile data and create reports about Disability Support Services (DSS).
- Maintain confidential counseling records and educate community in crisis management.
- Maintain documentation required for providing accommodations.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work, or related fields.
- At least one year of experience in academic advising, admissions, career counseling, or related higher education area, or a Master’s degree.
- Excellent communication, time management skills, initiative, and teamwork ability.
- Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, email, databases including student records and social media tools.
- Preferred knowledge of learning disabilities, hearing and visual impairments, chronic diseases, psychiatric disabilities, and mobility impairments.
- Strong administrative, organizational, and customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in college student personnel, higher education, counseling psychology, or related discipline preferred.
- Experience demonstrating leadership qualities preferred.
- Community college experience or credential preferred.
