Freeform is deploying software-defined, autonomous metal 3D printing factories globally, utilizing advanced sensing, real-time controls, and data-driven learning to deliver digitally verified, flawless parts at unprecedented speed and cost. The mission is to make 3D printing available to all industries at scale, unlocking future innovation.
As a Build Engineer, the candidate will take ownership of building, assembling, and integrating complex, custom mechanical systems from scratch, supporting the transition from prototype to production. This role intersects design, manufacturing, and system integration, collaborating with innovative engineers on various projects to develop and refine technology. The ideal candidate thrives in ambiguity, drives challenging projects with minimal oversight, and collaborates across disciplines.
Responsibilities:
- Own assembly, integration, and bring-up of complex mechanical and electromechanical systems
- Develop and document scalable manufacturing and assembly procedures
- Collaborate with design and manufacturing engineers to optimize builds for performance, precision, and repeatability
- Provide feedback and perform CAD modifications
- Create and iterate on mechanical designs including custom tooling and fixtures
- Lead alignment, calibration, and precision tuning
- Troubleshoot issues in mechanical/electromechanical subsystems
- Support transitioning systems from R&D to production
- Conduct hands-on testing and validation of mechanical performance
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, or manufacturing engineering from an ABET-accredited university
- Hands-on mechanical/build experience from internships or engineering clubs (e.g., FSAE, Baja SAE, robotics)
- Experience with manual mills, lathes, and other machine shop tools
- Strong mechanical fundamentals and problem-solving mindset
- Passion for building and debugging complex systems
Nice to Have:
- Advanced degree in engineering
- Experience building engines, rockets, drones, robots, cars
- Familiarity with CNC machining, welding, bonding, fastening
- Tooling design, fixture development, custom fabrication experience
- Understanding of DFM/DFA principles
- Experience with metal 3D printing
- Comfortable with fast-paced, ambiguous environment
- Strong communication and ownership mindset
- Strong work ethic with refuse to fail mindset
- Demonstrated indicators of excellence such as leadership or academic achievements
Location:
Hawthorne, CA in a 35,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility with team collaboration spaces and easy freeway access. Located in LA’s emerging tech ecosystem.

Compensation:
Estimated salary range $90,000-$95,000 depending on education/experience, plus significant stock option package.
