Job Summary

The Engineering Technician supports the implementation and administration of the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program by collecting and analyzing traffic data, responding to public inquiries, preparing reports and presentations, and assisting in community engagement efforts. This position works under the direct supervision of a licensed engineer and plays a key role in improving neighborhood traffic safety and livability.

Engineer positions are represented by PROTEC17, Professional and Technical Employees.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Transportation, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 1–3 years of experience in traffic engineering, public works, or a related technical field.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with GIS, AutoCAD, or traffic data tools is a plus.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in the field and in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with local government or community-based programs.
• Knowledge of traffic calming principles and neighborhood traffic safety strategies.
• Bilingual skills are a plus for community engagement.

Knowledge of: Traffic control systems including the installation and maintenance procedures for traffic signals.

Ability to: Prepare written reports, and maintain logs and records of statistical data; review drawings and plans; identify and design traffic signal systems necessary to meet legal requirements, control traffic, and meet safety requirements; monitor and maintain a parts inventory and to compute quantities and costs of supplies; follow written and oral instructions and to express ideas effectively orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external personnel.

It is general policy of the County that new employees should be hired at the lower steps of the applicable range and advance through the range at the normal progression.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Data Collection & Analysis

• Conduct fieldwork to collect traffic data, including speed studies, volume counts, and observational surveys.
• Process and analyze traffic data using spreadsheets, GIS, and traffic analysis software.
• Assist in preparing technical summaries and visualizations to support engineering decisions.

Public Engagement & Communication

• Respond to inquiries and concerns from residents regarding neighborhood traffic issues.
• Attend evening public meetings and open houses to provide technical support and assist in presenting information to the community.
• Help prepare materials such as flyers, maps, and presentations for public outreach.

Technical Support & Reporting

• Assist in the preparation of engineering reports, memos, and documentation for NTMP projects.
• Support the development of traffic calming plans and conceptual designs under the direction of a licensed engineer.
• Maintain accurate records of project activities, public feedback, and data findings.

Program Implementation

• Help coordinate the installation of traffic calming measures such as signage, pavement markings, and physical devices.
• Monitor project progress and assist in evaluating the effectiveness of implemented solutions.
• Support interdepartmental coordination and communication with contractors or vendors as needed.
