Main Responsibilities
- Build and continuously enhance advanced NMR capability at the Covestro APAC Innovation Hub (PRDC, TAP Analytics Lab) to enable deep molecular-level analysis that supports complex polymer R&D challenges and drives innovation in high-performance materials.
- Design, optimize, and validate complex 1D/2D NMR experiments and translate complicated spectra into clear/actionable insights to understand/identify monomer purity, monomer sequence, polymer architecture, polymerization mechanisms, curing/crosslinking kinetics, polymer degradation, potentially hazardous residuals or by-products, etc. enabling fast & confident decision-making.
- Apply NMR techniques to address key polymer challenges and integrate complementary analytical techniques when needed to strengthen interpretation and provide holistic solutions to improve product performance and reliability, supporting product innovation, process optimization/troubleshooting, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, etc.
- Work closely with BE's R&D teams and external research institutes to solve complex technical problems, ensure alignment with business needs, and stay connected to scientific advancements.
- Establish and validate robust NMR workflows for both routine and non-routine analysis, ensuring high data quality, reproducibility, and regulatory compliance.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing and technical training across the region to close the NMR expertise gap, build local talent, and align APAC capabilities with global analytical standards.
- Identify digitalization/automation initiatives and implement in the analytical lab to improve efficiency, data integrity, and innovation readiness including exploring AI-assisted spectral interpretation and modern data workflows.
- Apply other advanced analytical techniques as needed to support broader R&D and business objectives, leveraging expertise in complementary analytical techniques.
- Stay current with emerging NMR technologies and best practices, proactively identifying opportunities to enhance workflows and scientific excellence.
Qualification Requirements (Education & Work Experience)
- PhD degree in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, polymer chemistry or a related field with minimum 5 years hands-on experience of NMR analysis or complementary analytical techniques.
- Proven ability to develop, optimize and validate NMR methods for structural elucidation, quantitative analysis and impurity profiling. Proficient in using related software. Skilled in translating complex 1D/2D NMR spectra into actionable insights for cross-functional teams.
- Strong background in polymer chemistry, especially in polyurethane, coating & adhesive or polycarbonate, including their processes and applications.
- Experienced in delivering high-quality analytical support to diverse stakeholders. Given ability of scientific thinking and problem-solving skills, enabling faster decision-making.
- Proactive in identifying opportunities to improve workflows and adopt new technologies; experience with other advanced analytical techniques is a plus.
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to continuously learn and stay current with the latest advancements in NMR technologies and methodologies.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset to work across functions, regions, and cultures. Capable of managing multiple priorities/deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Experience with digitalization and lab automation to enhance analytical efficiency; familiarity with AI applications is a plus.
- Proficiency in English both oral and written.
