About the Opportunity
The Regional Security Director (RSD) reports to the Senior Director for Global Site Security within the Northeastern University Police Department. This role is focused on developing and overseeing a campus public safety team across multiple locations.
The RSD will lead daily operations of the Oakland Public Safety Department alongside the current Director of Public Safety, managing a mid-size team supporting the Oakland campus 24/7, supplemented with contracted security services. The position is based in Oakland with occasional travel to West Coast, East Coast, and international locations.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- 5+ years law enforcement experience (operational and administrative)
- 2+ years leadership experience managing security teams similar in size to Oakland's department
- Experience with large campuses and multi-purpose buildings
- Familiarity with federal and California laws such as Clery Act, Title IX, FERPA, and law enforcement regulations
- Trained in less lethal weapons including baton, OC spray, handcuffs
- Knowledge of CPTED principles, security equipment, and public safety communications
- Completion of CA Post Academy or equivalent
- Valid US Driver's License and Passport
- Valid BSIS Card or California POST certification
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Exceptional project management skills and ability to pass comprehensive background check
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Communications, Leadership, or related
- Advanced training (FBI National Academy or command school)
- Membership in law enforcement professional associations (IACLEA, IACP)
- Experience in higher education security
- Additional security-related credentials
- Experience managing safety for large-scale events
- Familiarity with academic, research, and administrative operations in higher education
Key Responsibilities:
1) Oakland Public Safety Department (80%)
- Lead day-to-day operations and strategic growth of the department
- Oversee all personnel (officers, dispatchers, administrative staff)
- Use intelligence to guide decision-making on crime trends and incident response
- Support staff accountability and promote positive morale
- Perform officer/supervisor duties as needed
- Coordinate with local law enforcement and agencies
- Advise senior leadership on safety trends and incidents
- Collaborate with university colleagues across departments
- Identify areas for improvement and implement solutions
- Focus on professionalizing team through staffing and training development
- Enhance community engagement with campus and local organizations
- Conduct site assessments and recommend safety enhancements
- Represent public safety at campus events and meetings
2) Global Network Sites (20%)
- Travel multiple times yearly to West Coast, London, Canadian, and expanding Global Network locations
- Assess site security, engage with contracted security and local law enforcement
- Deliver staff and student trainings including orientation safety training
- Prepare reports and recommendations based on site visits
