About the Opportunity
The Regional Security Director (RSD) role reports to the Senior Director of Global Site Security within the Northeastern University Police Department. This forward-thinking position oversees security standards and leads the development of the campus public safety team across multiple locations.
Job Summary
The RSD leads day-to-day operations of the Oakland Public Safety Department alongside the current Director of Public Safety. This department comprises civilian public safety officers, dispatchers, and administrative staff supporting the Oakland campus 24/7, supplemented by contracted security services. The role is based at the Oakland Campus with occasional travel to West Coast Global Network locations and other campuses nationally and internationally.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree
- 5+ years prior law enforcement experience with operational and administrative expertise
- 2+ years leadership experience managing law enforcement/security teams similar in size and capacity
- Experience with large campuses or multipurpose buildings with varying risk assessments
- Knowledge of relevant federal and California state laws (Clery Act, Title IX, FERPA)
- Training with less lethal weapons and familiarity with CPTED principles and security equipment
- Expertise in public safety communications and police/fire/EMS language
- Completion of CA Post Academy or equivalent; valid US driver's license, passport, and BSIS or California POST certification
- Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and project management skills
- Ability to work with a diverse population and establish partnerships within the university and external agencies
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background check
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Communications, Leadership or related field
- Advanced training such as FBI National Academy or command school
- Membership in relevant law enforcement associations (IACLEA, IACP)
- Experience in higher education security and physical security technologies
- Experience with large-scale event security and familiarity with academic and administrative environments
Key Responsibilities
1) Oakland Public Safety Department (80%)
- Lead operations and growth of the Oakland Public Safety Department (18+ staff)
- Oversee personnel including administrative staff, dispatchers, officers, supervisors, and potential sworn staff
- Utilize intelligence for crime trend analysis, incident response, and strategic personnel deployment
- Support staff accountability, positive morale, and perform supervisory duties as needed
- Collaborate with local law enforcement and public safety agencies to coordinate responses and proactive measures
- Advise university leadership on safety trends and incidents; represent public safety at campus events and meetings
- Conduct site assessments and recommend security enhancements
- Drive professionalization and training standards of the department
- Expand community engagement with students, faculty, staff, and external partners in Oakland
2) Global Network Sites (20%)
- Travel several times yearly to Global Network sites (Vancouver, Seattle, San Jose, London, Canada)
- Assess sites, engage with contracted security and local law enforcement
- Deliver staff and student safety training; prepare reports and recommendations based on site visits
- Lead student orientation safety training annually for Global Network locations

- This is an on-call position requiring flexibility for major events and critical incidents
- Requires significant computer use for presentations, proposals, and briefings (Microsoft Word & PowerPoint)
