Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day to day functions of the nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long term care facility. Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures that govern the day to day functions of the nursing service department. Ensure that reference material is current at nurses stations. Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department. Ensure the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and adhered to. Make reports and recommendations to the Director. Review and recommend policy revisions. Develop methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services. Ensure compliance with job descriptions. Participate in quality assurance program and facility surveys. Review and update residents' discharge plans. Plan nursing services portion of discharge plans. Meet with nursing and support staff to plan services, programs, and activities. Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required. Complete accident/incident reports. Interpret department policies to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies. Perform administrative duties including completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting. Maintain confidentiality of resident and facility information.
Attend various facility committee meetings (Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment). Prepare reports of nursing service programs and activities. Provide information to Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee. Participate in Care Plan Committee meetings and discharge plan reviews. Implement committee recommendations as directed.
Ensure sufficient staffing of licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants. Develop work assignments and delegate authority and responsibility to Charge Nurses. Ensure nurse aides are enrolled or graduated from approved programs and supervised. Make rounds to ensure work assignments are performed according to nursing standards. Monitor absenteeism and report problems. Enforce policies, procedures, and dress codes. Review complaints and grievances. Maintain good working relationships interdepartmentally. Foster a positive work environment. Conduct shift meetings to address problems and improve services. Evaluate workforce and make recommendations. Participate in performance evaluations and staffing decisions. Administer disciplinary action fairly. Report occupational exposures and incidents of fraud. Ensure proper computer workstation security.
Inform nursing personnel of admissions and room assignments. Prepare rooms and greet new residents. Escort residents as necessary. Make rounds with physicians. Encourage timely physician documentation. Notify Director of physician visit delays. Consult with residents, families, and physicians on care plans. Notify attending physician and next of kin of condition changes. Observe and evaluate residents daily. Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel. Review nurses' notes for quality and compliance. Provide direct care including starting IVs, obtaining specimens, vital signs, admissions, transfers, discharges. Report problems and assist in corrective actions. Inform Director of residents' status. Assist Charge Nurse in monitoring seriously ill residents. Authorize restraint use per policy. Ensure compliance with medication administration procedures. Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules. Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety. Check residents unable to call for help frequently. Meet with residents and families as needed. Assist with transportation arrangements for discharged residents. Inform family of resident death and arrange funeral home contact as requested.
Participate in planning and conducting in-service training programs. Assist with annual training program development covering OSHA, TB, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Safety, Infection Control, etc. Assist in clinical supervision of nurse aide trainees. Attend continuing education programs to maintain licensure.
Assist Safety Officer in developing nursing service safety standards. Collaborate with Infection Control Coordinator to identify tasks with potential exposure to blood/body fluids. Ensure participation in in-service training prior to tasks with exposure risk. Maintain adequate personal protective equipment supply and ensure proper use and disposal. Monitor personnel compliance with safety regulations. Maintain clean and sanitary nursing work areas and resident rooms. Enforce hand hygiene procedures. Conduct fire safety and disaster preparedness drills. Participate in infection control program implementation. Report hazardous conditions and ensure personnel use proper safety equipment when moving residents. Report missing or illegible labels and MSDSs.
Recommend equipment and supply needs to Director. Maintain adequate stock levels. Assist Maintenance Director with preventive maintenance programs. Participate in procedures for safe operation of equipment. Ensure only trained personnel operate equipment. Monitor efficient use of supplies. Ensure MSDSs are on file for hazardous chemicals.
Participate in development of residents' nursing assessments and written care plans. Encourage resident participation in care plan development and review. Review care plans for appropriateness and revisions. Ensure all care providers are aware of care plans. Review nurses' notes for care plan adherence. Assist Resident Assessment/Care Plan Coordinator with MDS planning and implementation. Ensure treatments align with residents' care plans and wishes.
Remain informed of economic conditions affecting nursing services. Recommend service adjustments and equipment needs. Report suspected fraud related to billing or kickbacks.
Assist with supervision and management of nursing staff. Exercise delegated administrative authority and accountability for assigned duties.
Education and Experience: Nursing degree from accredited institution; training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing; minimum 2 years experience preferably in long term care.
Language Skills: Proficient English reading, writing, speaking; read technical procedures and policy manuals; effectively present information.
Mathematical Skills: Basic math skills for practical applications.
Reasoning Ability: Independent decision-making; problem-solving; tactful interaction; leadership; planning and organizational skills; knowledge of nursing/medical practices and regulations; patient and cheerful disposition; communication skills.
Certificates: Current active RN license in state; CPR certification; PCC knowledge preferred; maintain continuing education and licensure; good standing with State Board of Nursing.
Physical Demands: Ability to move throughout workday; communicate in English; manage mental and emotional stress; sight and hearing adequate; physical ability to lift at least 25 pounds and assist in resident evacuation; function independently.
Work Environment: Office and nursing areas; subject to interruptions; contact with residents, staff, visitors, government; potential exposure to hazardous substances and infectious diseases; work beyond normal hours; participate in educational programs; must maintain safety and infection control standards.
